Meet Our Adoptable Cats

Adopting from AARC

Why adopt a dog or cat from Appalachian Animal Rescue Center

Why Adopt and Not Buy?

“Don’t breed or buy while shelter pets die” Is a refrain you may encounter among people involved in animal rescue. Every year, some 10,000 dogs and cats are euthanized in NC alone, most for space reasons. By adopting, you are saving a life. While AARC is a no-kill shelter, when you adopt from AARC, we can save more animals. And if you think only mixed breeds end up in shelters—think again: Nationwide, 30% of shelter animals are pure breeds! Some come from abusive situations, but the majority were loved by their owners, and given up for reasons such as financial hardship, health of the owner, or because the landlord prohibits pets. Make an appointment to meet a particular pet or come and browse. Our knowledgeable staff can help you make the right choice!

Adoption Fees

Adoption fees are $65 for adult cats and dogs; $75 for kittens or puppies. The adoption fee includes vaccines, neuter or spay surgery through ASPCA, and a free exam from a veterinarian on our list (all adoptions are granted at the discretion of the shelter Manager). Look for our adoption specials!

Fostering

Consider being an AARC Foster Parent

Fostering a dog or cat can be an incredibly rewarding experience! Beyond trial fostering (bringing home a pet on a trial basis), we need fosters interested in caring for sick, unweaned, or pregnant pets, and fosters interested in providing a pet with a temporary home, until a permanent home can be found.
